The French School System - how does it work?

It's ALL different on the other side of the ocean.

The grade system, the names of the grades, the evaluations, homework, as well as the registration process for schools.

Having been confused and frustrated with the system when my toddler started with first daycare and then school, I understand the dilemma of new mums who've recently moved to town.

Below is a useful chart which shows the equivalent systems compared in the UK, US and France. Hope it helps you begin your child's journey into the schools in France!

REGISTERING YOUR CHILD TO A PUBLIC SCHOOL:

In order to register your child(ren) to a public school, you need to go through the "Mairie" or the city townhall. They will give you all the information you need to begin the process. The public schools are usually chosen for you and not the other way round, depending on your home address.
